Essential Job Duties: 

Food Policy Councils provide a forum for diverse stakeholders to come together and address common concerns regarding food systems including food security, food regulations, health and nutrition, food access, farm viability and economic development through food and agriculture.

The Local Food Council of North Carolina (LFCNC) was formerly the legislated Sustainable Local Foods Advisory Council of North Carolina and serves as NC’s statewide food council. The council has 20+ members and consists of statewide agencies, organizations, and business representatives from a variety of sectors that intersect with the food system. The Council works closely with CEFS’ Community Food Strategies initiative in supporting the development of a network of local and regional councils across the state. The council has three working committees: Capacity Building, Communications, and Policy.

The Council was recently funded through a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation allowing for this part-time position. The position is half-time for 45 weeks, with the possibility of renewal depending on funding. The position will be housed in the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, supervised by the Community Food Strategies team, and will interface closely with the LFCNC Communications Committee.

Essential Job Duties:

The position will include:

1. Providing administrative/coordinating support to the Council under the direction of the Community Food Strategies team and the LFCNC: This will include assisting with meeting logistics (acquiring space, sending notices, working with CFS and the LFCNC Executive Team on agenda setting and distribution, assisting with logistics for a statewide gathering of local councils, etc.); communicating with council members; interfacing with the LFCNC Executive Team, Community Food Strategies and LFCNC members; working with the Community Food Strategies team on agenda setting and operations and activities of the council as needed; assisting with administrative support (e.g. reimbursements for council members for meeting travel, capturing notes and building continuity between quarterly meetings and committee meetings of the LFCNC, facilitation support at quarterly LFCNC meetings, etc).

2. Communications/marketing support: The individual will assist the LFCNC with website development, social media, writing and/or design of communication materials, marketing the work of the LFCNC, media outreach, and possibly fundraising and grant writing for the council.

Minimum Experience/Education:

-Bachelor’s degree
-Communication and Marketing expertise a must
-Organizational and Communication skills are highly desired
-Working knowledge of food systems.

Departmental Required Skills:

-Excellent communication, follow up and time management skills
