Anticipated Hiring Range: $10-12/hour
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday with some weekends as needed.
Essential Job Duties:
This position offers work with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) with a graduate student research project studying losses in vegetable crop in North Carolina. The project focus is measurement of vegetable crops that remain unharvested in fields, even though they are of edible and nutrient-dense quality.
The duties of this position include harvesting vegetable crops in the field, sample and data collection and entry, sorting produce, and operating a University vehicle. Occasional duties may include calculation, transcription field work planning, writing up short grower reports, and interacting with vegetable growers. The majority of this work will take place outside on a working commercial farm.
Minimum Experience/Education:
-Enrolled in a B.S. or associates degree program (or already graduated) with evidence of the applicants desire to work in Horticulture.
-Interest in Sustainable Agriculture or food loss and waste is strongly encouraged.
Departmental Required Skills:
-Must be able to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions, such as heat and humidity
-Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds on a routine basis.
-Must be able to stand, stoop, bend and walk on uneven terrain for extended periods of time.
-Valid drivers license
-Must be willing to work as part of a team, but also be independently motivated.
-Must have the highest regard for research accuracy
-Basic computer skills, such as Microsoft Office and email are required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
-Prefer a student with a horticulture, agribusiness or food systems background and some research experience including data collection and knowledge of research methods.
