Native American Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Apprenticeship

As part of its ‘Developing Food and Agricultural Career Pathways for Lumbee Youth’ project, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) in partnership with Robeson Community College and the University of North Carolina Pembroke is seeking highly-motivated students and/or young adults interested in pursuing careers in agriculture, agricultural business or food systems to participate in a hands-on apprenticeship program. Apprentices will work on local Lumbee-owned food and farm businesses in Robeson County, NC.

Apprenticeship Overview

This apprenticeship will begin in either April or May 2021 and last for approximately one year. During this year-long program, the apprentices will be paired with experienced mentors from Lumbee-owned food and agricultural businesses in Robeson County, NC and will have the opportunity to:

  • Receive hands-on training and education in sustainable food production
  • Participate in monthly professional development trainings related to food systems and farming work
  • Network with other apprentices and food and farm businesses within the field of sustainable food production
  • Partake in a four-day farm tour across NC
  • Assist Lumbee-owned businesses with supporting local food systems in Robeson County, NC
  • Duties may include food production, website assistance, social media, business or logistics planning depending on applicant’s interest and the needs of the business

Examples of Host Sites and Mentors

  • Multi-acre row crop production
  • Small-scale sustainable vegetable farm
  • Hydroponics production facility

Apprenticeship Hours and Compensation

Apprentices will be paid $12/hr for approximately 20hrs/week. Weekly hours TBD based on applicant’s schedule and organizational needs.

Requirements for Apprentices 

  • Applicants should be current or recently graduated students living in and around Robeson County, NC.
  • Enthusiasm for local food production and respect for farmers and producers from diverse rural communities
  • Must attend an orientation and farm tour the last week of May
  • Must hold a drivers license and have access to transportation to the host site
  • High school degree or equivalent required

COVID-19 Precautions

We will prioritize the health and safety of internship participants and everyone affiliated with the program above all else. At this point in time, we are planning to hold the Native American Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Apprenticeship in person beginning April/May of 2021. During the apprenticeship, we will follow the recommended protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the state of North Carolina. Because of the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, guidance is subject to change.
