The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) are seeking a Temporary Extension Technician to serve the needs of the Small Farm Unit in Goldsboro, NC, in the development and delivery of training, demonstration, and educational programs supporting the mission of CEFS and the Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T.

This temporary appointment is until 6/30/2023 and will report to Goldsboro, NC unit.

Key Responsibilities: The Technician is expected to:
1. Work collaboratively with the project Principal Investigators, Small Farm Unit manager, as well as other partners. Close collaboration with Horticulture and Natural Resources Extension Programs is required.
2. Provide support for the year-round fruit and vegetable production and management, field maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other farming related tasks as required.
3. Provide on-site task supervision and lead as a role model to student interns, apprentices, and project assistants as guided by the project advisors and farm manager.
4. Prepare and complete reports, brochures, booklets, and other materials for county extension agents, NGOs, and other community-based entities.

Preferred Experience:

1. BS (or MS preferred) in Horticulture, Plant and Soil Sciences, Agronomy, Agroecology, and other farming related degrees.
2. 1-3 years of commercial farming experiences including field operations, greenhouse operations, and high tunnel operations.
3. Sufficient Horticulture knowledge, background, and education
4. Able to lift 50-70 pounds
5. Able to complete maintenance and construction works
6. Able to operate farming equipment (tractor and attachments, zero-turn mower, gator, weed eater, tiller, flame weeder, etc.)
7. Able and willing to work in the open field under weather variations
8. Able and willing to work over weekends when needed to deliver training and demonstration
9. Able to use Microsoft EXCEL, WORD, PowerPoint, and other computer software to complete data entry and data analysis.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform farming practices and management of the project sites.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining projects and demonstrations related to small farms,
  • Assist with producer and extension agent training for stakeholders
  • In collaboration with the Small Farm Unit manager to complete tasks such as equipment maintenance, mowing, seeding, transplanting, weeding, soil testing, harvesting, and consistent data collection and data analysis.
