Essential Job Duties:
The Research Assistant position will work with the CEFS Education, Extension and Field Research Liaison, CEFS Director, and Farming Systems Research faculty at CEFS to coordinate a surveillance and eradication program for Tropical Spiderwort, a federally noxious weed at Cherry Research Farm. The incumbent will oversee spiderwort eradication and surveillance activities on a 200-acre long-term farming systems experiment and the Organic Unit at CEFS.
Utilizing a GPS-based systematic scouting system, the incumbent’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee management treatment regimens on various systems of agriculture including organic production systems
- Provide regular map-based update to project team
- Coordinate activities with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) Plant Industry scout team
- Provide twice-monthly update to North Carolina State University and NCDA&CS staff of project work
- Serve as liaison with NCDA&CS Plant Industry Division, NCDA&CS Research Station Division, and CEFS research team
- Identify possible alternative management strategies and test as appropriate
- Report and grant writing for further eradication efforts
- Additional duties as assigned
Minimum education and experience:
- Master’s Degree in Crop Science, Horticultural Science, Weed Science or related field, or a Bachelor’s degree in Crop Science, Horticultural Science, Weed Science or related field and 3 years of experience
- Experience with GPS/GIS data management
