Who Should Apply

The ASPIRE program is seeking highly-motivated undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds, with a strong interest in sustainable agriculture or food systems, to participate in this unique interdisciplinary 10-week summer research and extension program. The program is open to all rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students enrolled in a university program leading to a baccalaureate degree. Preference is given to rising juniors and seniors. Students from institutions outside NC State are encouraged to apply, though there will be a select number of spots reserved for NC State students. Members of demographic groups that are underrepresented in the sciences are especially encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

To apply, fill out the online application along with each of the following components. All documents should be uploaded electronically in either PDF or MS Word format.

Be sure to include:

  • A personal statement that addresses your interest in sustainable agriculture and food systems, as well as career goals. Restrict your statement to 1 – 1.5 pages.
  • A 1-page resume highlighting any laboratory skills, research experience, awards, honors, or extracurricular activities that you would like us to know about.
  • A digital copy of your academic transcript.
    • Please include a transcript from the college you are currently attending and from your previous school if you are a transfer student. If your institution sends transcripts directly, you should have it sent to yourself and then upload the file here. An unofficial transcript from the university is acceptable.
  • Arrange for a letter of recommendation from a professor or faculty member who is able to comment on your academic ability.

Eligibility

Candidates for the ASPIRE program must:

  • be citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university
  • be entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year
  • be able to work at least 40 hours per week for the entire 10-week term (5/22-7/28)
