An Analysis of North Carolina’s Seafood Industry: National and State Perspectives
Jessica Newsome/Fall 2013
The local foods movement presents an opportunity for growth within North Carolina’s seafood industry. This developing trend is the result of an emerging awareness and concern about the safety of food supply chains. Subsequently, U.S. consumers are seeking out local food sources where the supply chain between producer and consumer is well documented and may be willing to pay a premium for local food. This report includes national and NC catch statistics, a breakdown of markets for NC landed seafood, a breakdown of value-added as a percent of total markup for US landed seafood; a SWOT analysis for the NC seafood industry, and value chain maps that trace the movement of NC-landed shrimp, bluecrabs, hard clams, and flounder from fisherman to food service company.
