CEFS End-of-Year Letter 2020

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) envisions a future of vibrant farms, resilient ecosystems, strong communities, healthy people, and thriving local economies. CEFS has always focused on simultaneously improving food and farming systems, as they currently exist, while also pioneering innovations for the food system of the future.

This year, our future-focused preparations allowed us to be in the “right place at the right time” to play a role in the food system response to the pandemic. We also want to recognize the many other organizations, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)-led organizations, that have met this moment with compassion, creativity, and solutions grounded in lived experience.

Many are interested in moving forward from 2020 as quickly as possible, and while it has been a trying year, we believe it is also important to reflect on what we learned this year. Many eyes were opened to the injustices BIPOC experience disproportionately, including in the food system. Tools and creative collaborations helped ease the burdens of 2020, and community members came together to support one another during the greatest public health challenge of most of our lifetimes. Please read each section below to learn how CEFS’ work showed up in 2020, while looking toward the future we envision.

Why wait for the future we envision?

Twenty-six years ago, the groundbreaking partnership between North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services established CEFS as a pioneer in long-term, sustainable agriculture research. The decisions and contributions CEFS supporters have made over the years have made it possible for the work we are doing today. How will you decide to help make this vision a reality TODAY?

In the future, will we look back at 2020 as the year the food system pivoted? The year we turned crisis into change? This year has strengthened our resolve to develop and promote just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.
