The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is seeking a self-motivated, skilled, and goal-oriented Communications Assistant interested in local food and farming. The Communications Assistant will support CEFS’ day-to-day communications work, including supporting the management of the CEFS website, social media accounts, and contributing to our newsletters.
This is a 20-40 hours/week position (full-time preferred) (hourly rate $18.40-$20.80/hour). This position will provide an opportunity to gain real experience as part of a communications team tasked with supporting CEFS’ many local food system and field research initiatives.
The Center for Environmental Farming Systems is a partnership of North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. CEFS develops and promotes just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.
The Communications Assistant will support CEFS’ day-to-day communications work. Roles and responsibilities include:
Social Media
- Develop posts for CEFS accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest
- Work with CEFS Communications Team to strategize new ways to share CEFS’ mission with a broader audience and grow our social media following
- Collect and analyze data related to social media marketing campaigns
Website
- Update website content using WordPress, including the events calendar, publications, blog, and other resources
Graphic Design
- Develop social media graphics and promotional materials using CEFS Communications templates to communicate information about CEFS field research, food systems, and other initiatives
Videography and Photography
- Support CEFS Communications Team and CEFS initiatives with videography and photography needs, including some travel
Other
- Help to track communications data, including website usage and social media engagement
- Support with event promotion, development of monthly internal and external e-newsletters, media outreach, and sharing job postings
- Provide administrative support to CEFS Communications as needed

Work Schedule

Minimum Experience/Education – Undergraduate student with coursework in Communications, Marketing, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Agroecology, Agriculture or related field preferred.
Departmental Required Skills – The position requires excellent communication, writing, follow-up skills, time management, and computer skills. An excellent work ethic and genuine interest in the work of CEFS is required. The following skills are required for this position:
- Strong professional communication, writing, and editing skills
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, organized, and able to meet deadlines
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
- Experience managing social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and/or LinkedIn
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education – The ideal candidate will have the following skills/attributes:
- Interest/experience in interviewing/storytelling
- Website content management systems, particularly WordPress
- Creating e-newsletters, particularly Constant Contact
- Graphic design and photo editing skills
- Familiarity in videography and video editing, or interest in learning
- Experience with analytics and SEO
- Marketing experience
- Experience or interest in equitable and sustainable food and farming systems
