How will host sites be approved?
Host sites will be approved through an application and interview process. Requirements for host farms can be found on the Farmer Application Process page.
Will housing be provided?
Housing will not be provided by NC State or the Sustainable Vegetable Production Apprenticeship program. Farm hosts may provide housing and it is up to the farmer and apprentice to negotiate such housing agreements.
What are the benefits of a “Registered” Apprenticeship?
The program is registered with ApprenticeshipNC, the state apprenticeship coordinating body. This credential will demonstrate to future employers nationwide that apprentices are fully qualified and highlight which skills they have mastered. Employers will be able to look up the program and core competencies achieved for each apprentice.
This apprenticeship offers more oversight and accountability for both the apprentice and host farm. Registered apprenticeships are required to have core competencies and an evaluation mechanism for each competency. Apprentices do not receive the certificate without passing each core competency. Registered apprenticeships must include both hands-on job training and classroom-based training providing both theoretical and experiential-based learning. Apprentices receive guaranteed wage increases throughout the program. The state of North Carolina has established free community college tuition if students enroll in a registered apprenticeship program within 120 days of graduating high school.
When is the application due?
Applications are open until all positions are filled.
Am I eligible to apply if I am not a U.S. citizen?
U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and citizens of Puerto Rico are eligible to apply.
Am I eligible to apply if I am not an undergraduate student?
Yes
When will I be notified if I have been accepted?
We will follow up within 5-7 business days after you submit an application to discuss interviews and next steps.
What are the dates of the Registered Sustainable Vegetable Production Apprenticeship Program?
Cohorts begin between February-April and end approximately 18 months from the start date for each apprentice.
What are the working expectations for apprentices?
Apprentices are expected to work 20 – 40 hours a week to reach about 2400 hours by the end of the 18-month program. Each apprentice will receive hands-on-training from an experienced mentor at their host farm. Apprentices should be prepared to work in all manner of environmental conditions.
Is there a stipend or other benefits provided for the program?
Apprentices will receive a stipend from CEFS for time spent completing Related Instruction and completing program reporting requirements.
