The Food Youth Initiative launched a youth-led public art initiative to bring attention to the effect of climate change in North Carolina and beyond. The FYI Mural Project activated youth groups, local artists and organizers by merging education, reflection, community building and arts. Participating youth have come together to learn about opportunities to shift food systems in response to climate change and frameworks for making change in their communities. Muralists Claire Alexandre and Alyzza May led several workshops with the youth to develop the concept for the mural and art galleries.

Open Forum: Strategies to Help Ag Producers Plan During the COVID-19 Crisis (2021)

The National e-Xtension Project Team: Community, Local and Regional Food Systems holds quarterly open forums via Zoom. This open forum, held on January 20, 2021, provided practitioners, extension agents, farmers, and agricultural producers an opportunity to identify gaps, brainstorm ideas, and share examples to support each other. Farmers and agricultural producers have experienced unprecedented challenges in handling the vulnerability of our food systems. As we move forward to plan for a new season and a new year during the COVID pandemic, there is an urgent need to seek and identify best strategies to support farmers and agricultural producers in adjusting goals and achieving prosperity.

CEFS’ 25th Anniversary Video Series Chapter 1: Founding Story (2019)

Twenty-five years ago, a groundbreaking partnership was established in North Carolina. NC State University, NC Agricultural and Technical State University, and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services founded the Center for Environmental Farming Systems at Cherry Research Farm in Goldsboro on February 1, 1994.

Non-profit organizations including NC Farm Bureau Federation, Land Loss Prevention Project, Rural Advancement Foundation International-USA and Carolina Farm Stewardship Association joined with farmers and citizens to advise the process.  Listen to the story from the founders themselves…

Food councils: Why, who, and what? (2019)

What is a food council? And what do food councils do and look like in North Carolina? This video shares the value, the players, and actions of food councils told from the perspective of food council members across the state of North Carolina. Our team at Community Food Strategies is forever grateful to work with such inspiring, creative people improving the quality of life in their communities through food. Community Food Strategies is multi-organizational project initiative that works to empower local food councils and networks to create community-led collaboration and equitable policy change at the local, state, and national level. Community Food Strategies is funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

Extension Master Food Volunteer program (2019)

Interest in food, cooking, and local food is at an all-time high. The Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) program is designed to engage North Carolina residents in food and nutrition programming in their community and train volunteers to further expand the reach of N.C. Cooperative Extension.

This program is ideal for volunteers who are interested in engaging and giving back to their communities, as well as for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of nutrition, food safety, cooking, and local foods.
